New arrangement of Valse Ancienne, originally written for Doris Hochscheid (cello) and Frans van Ruth (piano), in a new version with text

PREMIÈRE: 21 March 2026

This new version of Valse Ancienne, for cello, piano and spoken text, will be premièred by Doris Hochscheid and Frans van Ruth at the Paaskerk in Baarn. The original version for cello and piano was commissioned by Doris and Frans in 2003/2004 and, in the new version, will be paired with an element of storytelling, as the cellist adds her own poetry to the work. It is a piece related to ice and distance, and to seeing a bird, in the cold, through a glass window. Originally inspired by Wallace Stevens’ poem Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, the new theatrical version will recreate the sense of fragility timelessness and entrapment.
